anybody know on average how much less pc games sell compared to console games? What percent of the game market is on pc? Is there some sort of ratio or estimated numbers...? just curious It seems like only rts games and exceptions like the sims and those good online games only sell.

Uh, no? Here''s a little game you may be familiar with that has sold a bajillion and a half copies.

Half-Life.

FPSes sell far better on PCs. I wouldn''t even say the market is less because they''re aimed at two different groups of people. The thinking people who enjoy RTSes generally play PC games more than console ones, but "twitch" gamers seem to be evenly spread out.

Taking some December 2002 data published for the UK (the 3rd largest market for games in the world after the US and Japan):

Market share (units)
PS2 45.8%
PC 25.0%
PSOne 12.2%
Xbox 6.3%
GBA 5.8%
NGC 3.9%
GBC 0.9%
Others 0.3%

Market share (value)
PS2 56.1%
PC 17.7%
PSOne 6.7%
Xbox 7.8%
GBA 5.3%
NGC 5.3%
GBC 0.7%
Others 0.3%

The percentages for the US are pretty similar, but obviously fluctuate regularly. IIRC from last time I saw data for Japan, PC software does very poorly over there.

As Edward Ropple says, PC games have a different market - some games work better with a keyboard and mouse, sat at a desk, other games work better with a controller and the player sat on a sofa etc.

Due to no licenses being required and cheap development costs, the PC market is more saturated with games - though sales tend to be pretty polarized - a small handfull of games (Half-Life, The Sims etc) make the majority of the profit, the rest do "ok" or just about break even.
