Calculating normals (how?)

Can anyone point me to some tutorials on calculating normals for polygons? I want to be able to find the normal for a triangle or a quad so that I can do lighting and such. The object that I''m putting on the screen is a little more advanced than a cube so I need some good info to do normals. Thanks...
