A lot of the stuff he pointed to (like the merchants buying a bazillion jewels from you and the NPCs giving you quests) are mechanisms to make the game cater to the player. I''d love to see what an RPG would look like if the towns and world were simulated well enough so that the player wasn''t the center of the universe, but rather just an awesome hero who could alter what was already going on.
