Right, whether or not this ever gets anywhere is one thing... thinking about doing it is something else. Inspired by a post I made on another thread, I have thought about making an Elite/Frontier style game. I would remaing faithful to the original Frontier, but update the graphics, have superior enemies, more ships and cooler weapons. I also would like more interaction on the stations and more variation in missions, both civilian and military. This post exists to ask you, the people, what you think should be in it? I think you should look up on the net beforehand, ''cause I heard that there are groups out there trying to do something like that already.

Otherwise, it''s a cool idea, only if there is more depth to the types of missions/activities you can do. Starting as a postman or grunt until you can become a businessman is kindof annoying, even if it''s a normal evolution in Frontier. I''d rather like to be able to start with much more money so I can choose from a large panel of activities (oh, to have my own space station )

Yeah, there are about 3 or four projects, but I wanna make my own I have the technical expertise to do it, so why not?

First of all. A good combat engine. Something like Elite, with a better AI. Please don't do something like Frontier combat engine, but if you could use a similar 3D star map, that would be great.

Next, missions. Frontier is just ok on this, nothing more. If you can figure out a way to make it better(I probably can, but it will take more time that I have to write this now).

Give some life to the ships. In Elite they were doing nothing or just attacking you(I hear it's a little different in Archimedes Elite). Put some to mine asteroids, ships scooping fuel from stars or gas giants, ships doing trade being attacked for pirates(they could ask you for some help, then reward you or just increase your reputation - if you have it in your game). You could see the police chasing other ships (why the hell in Elite and Frontier they just came after you?). Perhaps some terrorist activity, planetary assaults... some heavily armored ships after pirates - preferably in formation, with combat tactics. Ships doing escort work for freighters... you get the idea.
I think AI is the answer. I have plenty of ideas for this type of game, just not enough time or experience to make my own I'd better stop here before I miss my class... cya

In this kind of game I would like to be able to board another ship, to build my own ship from various elements, and have carrier ships. I would like to be able to walk first person under a red sun and to visit the methane lakes of Fomalhaut ...
I love this kind of games and I wish you good luck on your project

I want to be able to build ships. *DESIGN* them with some outer editor, and play with them in game. I want to be able to upgrade everything in it, from scratch. If I am supposed to be a privateer, I'' rather like to end up having my own Falcon Millenium kustomized starship

MULTIPLAYER!

To me (and many others) multiplayer Elite has to be the holy grail of gaming.

RE: Missions, make a few, and let the rest be randomly generated. Take this cargo here, find and destroy this ship for a reward, etc could all be easily generated, with the skill level required increasing as the player gets more experienced.

Either way, multiplayer, baby!

You also need to be able to act as a pirate and steal cargo from other vessels. Otherwise why bother attacking them? Damaged/destroyed ships need to be able to be salvaged for their cargo/components.

I agree with the multiplayer angle. Every space sime that comes out I weigh against elite/privateer and hope it matches up and adds multiplayer mode.
