But IIRC I could pay $500,000 for the doom3 engine and use that quite fairly? So using your own engine should be fine - especially since most peoples' engines aren't as good as the freely available complete ones out there...

I'd definitely enter what you have and then maybe make a 2nd entry which is less of a hack. There is no reason why one of your entries would affect the results of your other one...
