Story in online games

Do you think it would be possible to add a story into an online game? Consider this scenario, say in UO. What if everything has been nice and peaceful for 3 years or so, but then there is a mysterious rumor of a war going to be started. A strange invincible npc could wander around from powerful guild to powerful guild, asking for warriors to help him in his quest to take over the world. It could be done mysteriously enough so nobody knows whether its a pc or an npc (i.e. somebody controlled by uo creators). Somebody finally agrees with them, and they recruit a guild - the uo creators give them super powerful weapons and they generally run around the world destroying shit prophesizing the impending doom. Then two weeks later, over the capital of uo, the air slowly turns purple. Nobody knows what is happening - and suddenly a rift opens up in town and creatures start spilling forth. FIrst the guards attack and hold them back a little, but then more creatures come and they completely overrun the town, slaughtering everybody in sight. They start spreading out and capturing peoples houses and castles. Then as they spread to other lands other creatures go in advance - and they offer pcs the choice to join their side. If they do they are spared, but if they betray them at all they are killed and gated away. Generally anybody entering evil controlled lands will be killed by the bad guys very quickly - only large organized war parties could make any sort of headway. As lands and towns are fought over there could be set times for battle, e.g. the good guys say we''re going to attack this town Sunday at 3pm eastern time. Everybody log in then and join the attack. As the war progresses they can learn stuff about the invasion - and how to stop it - like they have to gain this certain twon and kill the leader. This would be really unfair to a lot of people. They would pretty much just get killed with no choice, like everybody in the capital during the initial invasion. And people are really forced to participate in the war. And new players wouldn''t stand much of a chance. Maybe you could add a new class like a spy that new players could play. The war would ideally wage on for a few months before one side took over. Despite its certain limitations in player freedoms, I think it would be pretty cool! DO you guys think this is feasible or do you have any other ideas?
