Okay, say I have a finished program and want to release it as freeware. Should I get a GPL for it, and if so how? Are there any risks involved, and does it cost anything?

you would only want a GPL if you were making the source freely ailable etc... to just release a program as freeware you just need to state the terms and condition in which the software can or cannot be distributed/sold. Look at other freeware programs and see how the do it.

I know GNU is opensource, and I wouldn''t mind giving out the source code (except for games of course). I''m talking about straight programs.

Do you have to do any legal mumbo jumbo to get some papers proving you own the copyright if you DON''T want it opensource? I don''t know all the details on getting copyrights, but I''m learning programming pretty quickly and even have my own website on which I want to start putting my stuff.
If you want to get serious you can register your trademark, umm register yourself as a business etc. Other then that I do believe it''s automatically copyright aslong as you can proove it''s yours (source code would be ample).
Create a EULA (end user liscense agreements) saying that can''t sell it etc etc, all that kinda crap.

If i''m missing anything please speack up.
