Statistics on players

Hello. I''m looking for some way to get hold of statistics of computer game players. The data I would like to find are of the types: "How many bought/registered the game x?" "Approximately how many RTS/war players can I count on for the region/country x?" I figure that the first question relates to the sales figures of companies, which, no doubt is covered by NDA´s. However, perhaps there are examples out there, freely available? Something of the sort? Regarding the other question, it basically reflects my wish to !!!approximate!!! the amount of players in region/country x that are into RTS/war games. I suppose this kind of statistics could be get at from sales figures also. So we´re back to private figures covered by NDA´s. Or? Do you have any tips on how I can approximate the user base for software (in general)? I´d like some creative input on this issue, I´ve stopped dead in my tracks trying to get at approximate values of computer players. Thankful for thoughts on the matter.

These sort of statistics simply are not available freely, if at all.

the company formaly known as PCData (now NPD group) at http://www.npd.com do supply data on videogames but you have to pay to get it.

Other market research is available but all costs money. Most of it just covers retail sales (to a greater or lesser degree of accuracy) and there is little in the way of detailed breakdowns on the number of people playing particular types of games in a particular country.

IDSA have a few very basic titbits of info on their site at http://www.idsa.com/pressroom.html There state of the industry report has a few figures in it but they are a general overview rather than a detailed insight. It only covers the US.

Chartrack http://www.charttrack.co.uk does a report on the European market. This again costs money.
