DirectInput's DIMOUSESTATE z coordinate

The DX7 SDK says that the z coordinate in the DIMOUSESTATE type can be used to detect mousewheels, but does it need some kind of setup to work? It doesn''t seem to work just by itself. Daniel Netz, Sentinel Design
