The GIMP & Alpha

Why can''t I control the Alpha channel in GIMP? I''d like to be able to assign it a value from 0 to 255. Why can''t I do this? What''s the best way to use GIMP & alpha in harmony? -Forcas "Elvis is alive. He is Barney the purple dinosaur. Oh, that''s easy

You just have to create a so called ''layer mask'' and draw on it, paint, cut, paste, apply filters or whatever else you can think of..

I don''t have much time now to explain it, so I''ve just made a quick screenshot to show you how to do it:

btw. It''s always handy to have that ''layers and channels'' dialog onscreen.. you really can do everything with those layers.
