I think the only way of making a modern time game interesting would be to integrate some sort of Conspiracy in it. Perhaps the green men holds all japanese zaibatsus in their tentacles or there is a secret movement, paid by big petrol companies, dedicated to prevent new technologies to replace current car and gazoline. You would have to face well equiped men doing all they can to preserve their secrecy and achieve their goals ...

Sorry I forgot all about the Nephilims walking among us and possessing our bodies in their constant search of their lost powers and dont forget the werewolves wich looks like us except at full moon. ;-)
