New box?
Happened across the Cosmi website, and I noticed that my packaging looks different. Here's the pic from the site (sorry I couldn't find a bigger one).

Here's the original for comparison.

I oughta call those folks up and see if I can get a new one.

I'm gonna be sick
I didn't realize how bad times have gotten. IGN has a rundown on around TWENTY movies that are being made about videogames.

Cringe here.

Okay, there is one constant in the universe, and that is ALL MOVIES BASED ON VIDEOGAMES SUCK!

Street Fighter sucked
Tomb Raider sucked
Mortal Combat sucked
Super Mario …

Yet again still another freebie!
By now you know that I'm a sucker for free software, and I just found a good one.

Okay, not great but just okay, but free is free.

It's Microsoft's Picture It Express 7.0. It's one of those "Photoshop Lite" image editing programs. It's just what you need for simple photo editing or retouching.

Anyway,…

And now for the latest from the "it must be mine!" file. . .

Open-architecture Asian handheld game gizmo that can run an Atari 2600 emulator.

. . .ahem. . .

IT MUST BE MINE!!!!

Ballistic Bunny Battles: The Results Are In!
Well I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that the Ballistic Bunny Battles contest is now judged and I've got winners!

The winner is sgibson@aladdinscave.net and his level. I liked it because it uses a self-spinning bouncer to make things random, but it's not so random that you can't av…

Contest post-mortem
Thanks for the entries, folks. FWIW, 14 people entered 29 levels. I've played about half of 'em, and I'll be sifting through the rest this afternoon and tonight, putting the favorites into the game. I was planning on having about 12 levels in the game, figuring that would be plenty for a quickie we…

Ballistic Bunny Battles: The Contest
Okay folks, I need about a couple-dozen levels for my new Flash game, so I decided to have a contest. Using the Ballistic Bunny Battles level editor, design yourself a level for my new game. First prize is $50. Second prize is $25.

First off, try out the game. It's basically a seasonal game for the …

Almost done
My next Flash game is almost ready for the German client. To be completely un-humble, I think it's the best one yet.

Looks like I'll be having an impromptu level-design contest. I'll keep you posted with details here.

Durn this thing is cute!
Just to show that Bryan is not always the guy to have the latest gizmo around, Shelly and I just got ourselves a Roomba robot vacuum cleaner. The price recently dropped from its opening price of around $500 down to under $200 and, to quote Shelly, "It's like living in space", so we had to have one.…

Book Discount
Here's a secret code that Wordware posted at the GDC. If you use the following code when you check out:

2003-GDC-DSC

You'll get 30% off and free shipping. Unfortunately, this seems to be the same discount that Amazon is offering on Wordware titles (and Amazon ships free if your order is over $25), so…

New machine bliss
I didn't post it a while back because I was in the middle of a project and had the GDC and stuff going on, but my new HP replacement for my Main Development Box arrived a while back. Funniest thing is that it's virtually identical to the Compaq box we bought for CivilGrrl a couple of weeks earlier.…

Reviews on the way
Apologies to all who have sent me review copies of books and/or software. I really want to give the stuff I review the once-over, so it takes a bit of time. I just completed a book review, and next I've got a software review and two more books. It might take some time, but it will be posted.

For eve…

Hey, I'm back
Sorry about the intolerable delay. I got back from the GDC safe'n'sound. We've got plenty of fun reading here. I'll be submitting one product review and a couple of book reviews to gamedev in the next week or so. I've got a contract for another Flash game for the Germans. Our new engineer started w…

Girding girding girding
I'm girding my loins (what exactly does that mean anyway?) for a trip to the GDC. Leaving Monday and not coming back until the following Sunday. The wife and kiddo have grand plans, so I'm not worried about them.

Found a good deal while browsing the bargain sites. It's a new copy of "The Encyclopedi…

'nuther useful gizmo
Well, with the expansion of Shelly's business, we needed more space for backing up data. We've got a 60 gig Que!M3 firewire drive that's worked very well, but it's full, and adding more computers is just gonna make it worse. I looked into getting a second external drive until I found this.

My GDC Presentation
I finished up what I plan to talk about, so I figured I'd go ahead and post it here. The PowerPoint presentation is at the top, and the text of my speech is below it.

This is actually part 3 of a 3-part speech which has now become a 2-part speech because one of the parts bugged out at the last minut…

Got the Compaq
Well, the Compaq arrived that I bought a couple weeks ago. They shipped it directly to my house rather than to the local Staples, which was a nice surprise. It worked like a charm once I got it hooked up, and it's about the quietest goldurn thing in the house --a far cry from Shelly's big Dell mach…

This is sounding more like Chaos Manor every day
Well, I couldn't resist the deal on the Compaq I got the other day, so I put another machine on order. This time it's an HP from Staples, but it's a similar deal ($390 delivered to my door). It's got a Savage onboard-video rather than a GeForce2, but I didn't much care because I'm gonna cannibalize…

Cheap computer
Another deal for you insufferable cheapasses out there. Staples is now getting into configuring and taking delivery of Compaq machines, ala the Gateway stores. And a couple of their prices are unbeatable. Witness this desktop. The base price is $635, but with a $150 in-store rebate that drops the p…

Got me plane tickets
Thanks once again to Priceline, I got myself a cheap flight to San Jose, and it's leaving and coming back at a good time.

Shelly did all the bidding. She bid $200, and it was immediately accepted, which always gives you that "aww shucks" feeling, because you wish you could've gone back in time and b…

More free software!
Well, if you took advantage of that $25-after-rebate copy of Paint Shop Pro that I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, you're in luck because you can now parlay that into a cheap copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements.

First off, go here and order Photoshop Elements. When you check out, use the code [removed…

Leavin' on a jet plane
Oh, and I'm trying to find a cheap airfare to San Jose for the GDC. Shelly found a round trip for $188, but it left on the 4th, and there's a tutorial I wanna attend then. Best I've seen from places like Orbitz and Travelworm are around $240, which is still pretty good.

I'll probably try a $175 Pric…

Happy Festivus to all!
Sorry about not having an update and such. Been helping Shelly get out a couple of "drop everything" projects that popped up. I guess I'll just wish everyone a Happy Festivus and leave it at that.

My new Flash game
Well, "Woopie-Wald" (German name) went live on December first. I haven't heard any feedback on it, but the folks I know who have played it enjoyed it. I'll give you the URL at the end, but you first need to read the rules here, as the rules in the game itself are in German.

First off, I'm rather pro…

An even better deal
Paint Shop Pro 7 Anniversary Edition only twenty bucks after two rebates!

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005NCJ3/qid=1038920644

Frankly, that's a deal you can't beat. I swear by PSP as my paint program of choice. I've tried other ones, but I always end up coming back to PSP.

Another good deal
Folks like it when I post deals here. So here's one.

http://store.yahoo.com/purplus/carstud11.html

It's a bundle of the Carrara Studio 1.1 and Amapi 5.1 3D modelers for $60.71 (includes shipping). Carrara is a really cool 3D modeler built off Ray Dream Designer and InfiniD. Amapi is a standalone NURB…

I'm bummed. . .
I just read that uber-game-designer Sid Sackson died three weeks ago at age 82 from complications of Alzheimer's.

For those of you who write games and don't know who he is, get yer ass over here and read up on the guy. He was about the most prolific and talented game designer around, and even though…

'nuther Flash game
Excuse the lateness of my reply. I've been busy. Got a contract with the German kids' site to write another game for 'em. This one's a Christmas-themed remake of a DOS puzzle game that one of the guys on the site wrote a while back. We'll see if it turns out as fun as Olive Wars for Flash. This one…

Superhero movies
Since the other diaries are chimin' in with stuff like this, I'll go ahead and toss in my list of best/worst superhero movies.

Note that I'm giving weight to ambition here. A low-budget effort that succeeds is given extra weight. Similarly, a trivial piece of fluff that fails (Superman IV) doesn't c…
