the majority of us could get a multimon system for litle or no money.
Thing is, I don't believe that's true. While many people here have multihead cards, monitors are still a fair chunk of cash, and I don't think people percieve them to have as many external benefits as something like a faster internet connection.

Lots of people don't have shader-equppied PCs. Or non-dialup internet connections. All these would prevent some pretty interesting contests being run - the majority of us could get a multimon system for litle or no money.

Are you kidding? How many people do you know that will take the time and go out and buy a new monitor, just to be in a contest?
While I wouldn't want a multi-mon contest....

It is possible to do a combo tv/monitor to do a multiple monitor contest entry. And virtually everyone has SVideo out and a TV, at least that I know (analogous evidence isn't worth much but there it is).

Text-based ai contest. (where you each controll a player who pk's other players for experience and new stats, all in text-based fun!).

:-)

(mud + multiplayer + ai)
Click here to patch the mozilla IDN exploit, or click Here then type in Network.enableidn and set its value to false. Restart the browser for the patches to work.

Sounds good to me. =0
Maybe a whole artificial intelligence engine compo would be nice. You would program your best AI engine, and then implement it into a fully functional game that would best show off what your AI can do and how you can customize it to fit game needs.

Most of us aren't on our first PC and are the kind of people who will keep old kit - therefore loads of us have old CRT monitors which could be used. And you could buy a 2nd-hand one for £10 / $15 pretty esily or find a friend with an unused old one.

Technically you could just swap a single monitor between the outputs to check what each monitor displayed if you HAD to! But I see no reason why EVERYONE should want to enter each contest. Any contest on a specialist area like physics/maths etc will rule out a large chunk of people who don't have knowledge in that field or want to learn it.

This would probably be very difficult, but perhaps a group of people come up with a new programming language or authoring system, and then people have to make the best game with that.

By authoring system, I mean like RPGmaker 2 for the SNES. People would push the limits of the program to the limit, and then story and gameplay would become more important than who has the most experince coding.

Well I don't think the 4E4 contest had any restrictions on using game-making programs and I don't see a need for such a restriction in later contests (unless of course the contest is focusing on some technical aspect rather than just the game overall) so you can use whatever tools you like and focus on story and gameplay without worrying about writing loads of code. Indeed the wining game of 4E4 was made using GameMaker.
WOW! That is amazing. I have used GM before, and it is not the best of tools, but it can get the job done and give you a great game as a result. Do you have to submit your code for the compos?
